※郭合記自創士林小刀這把擁有亮黑色的牛角刀柄，如薄葉般的鋒利都刀刃，出自於打鐵匠─郭合之手，郭合18歲時曾跟隨一位人稱(貓牛師)的廣東師傅學做打鐵，學成之後自行創立(郭合記)，於清同治九年(西元1870年)發明茄柄竹葉刀而聲大名大噪；原以所在地名稱之為(八芝蘭刀)，後於日劇時期日本政府將八芝蘭改為士林後，遂正式更名為(士林刀)，在農業社會時代，並沒有太多便利的工具可使用，因此削、切、割東西，都仰賴士林刀，當時郭合作的刀具尺寸共有10種，每種差別半寸，以刀柄長度來說，最小為8分(僅2.5cm)，最大為5寸(約15cm)，可說適用於各種用途，因此漸漸打開(士林刀的)知名度，銷售全省各地。台灣光復前後，可說是士林刀最鼎盛的時期，於日據時期屢獲各項工藝大獎，如明治41年(西元1908年)受日人賞識，獲頒四等賞獎狀，昭和元年(西元1926年)受頒一面由純金打造日本橋梁圖案的金牌獎，昭和10年(西元1935年)參加台灣博覽會，榮獲優良賞獎牌......，種種榮耀使士林刀不僅全島聞名，也並及日本。因此頂著『士林刀』的名號，大北路上的刀舖眾多，一時之間磨刀霍霍，吸引不少中外人士前來購買。不過隨著百年時光飛逝，士林刀的盛況不再，目前僅剩郭合記手工製作，就這樣士林刀淡出日常生活，而轉以收藏為主。
